Finding a Studio Home

Choosing the right dance studio is about more than just convenient class times and fun recitals. It's about finding a place that nurtures your child's growth, with quality mentors that lead and inspire your child to be creative, grow in confidence, and love dance. As you explore your options, here are five essential questions to ask (these are the same five I gave my sister in Boise, Idaho):
What is the studio's teaching philosophy? Is the studio focus purely on performances and competition, or does the studio also prioritize learning and mentorship? A quality studio should offer a full journey -- from early fundamentals to advanced technique--while supporting each dancer's personal growth. Ask about their mission and how it shapes their programs.
Are the instructors experienced and qualified? Great teachers make all the difference. Look for instructors with professional dance degrees and a passion for teaching. A well-rounded faculty will know how to challenge advanced students while keeping beginners inspired and safe. Ask the studio owner how long the teachers have been with the company, as this can be helpful to know the culture.
Is the environment positive and age-appropriate? From the music and costuming to the classroom culture, a studio should foster respect, positive reinforcement and age-appropriate choices. I always recommend families visiting a dance recital to get a close look at the studio you hope to attend.
What kind of performance opportunities are offered? A well-structured studio should give dancers a variety of ways to grow and shine -- whether that's through annual recitals, holiday shows like a Nutcracker Ballet, competitions and even leadership training, such as a teaching assistant program. Ask if students have a clear path from preschool to teen, and what milestones they can look forward to. For example, if you have a child wanting to work towards pointe shoes one day, ask what age and level, how many days a week dancers train for this milestone and what safety precautions they use? Your dancer's feet are essential for life, so this is an important one!
How does the studio communicate with families? Strong communication reflects a strong organization. Is the studio responsive and proactive with updates? Do they offer clear schedules, policies, and support for parents? A studio that values transparency and connection helps famlies feel part of something special.
At Colorado School of Dance, we believe in a full-circle dance journey, from ages 3 to 18. We teach. We inspire. We perform. And most importantly, we build confidence and character in every student we train. If you're exploring studios, we'd love to welcome you for a tour and trial class.
